Imlay City celebrates Lions Park transformation

IMLAY CITY — Local officials and residents will gather Tuesday, Sept. 29, to celebrate the completion of a major transformation at Lions Park during a public ribbon-cutting ceremony from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The $800,000 project overhauled one of Imlay City’s core public spaces, adding multi-generational features, improving accessibility, and strengthening trail connections. The revitalization was funded through a Michigan SPARK Grant—a joint initiative of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Council of Michigan Foundations designed to expand public park access across the state.

Ground broke on the facility in September 2025 following an extensive public input campaign aimed at aligning the design with community priorities.

“This project began with listening to our community and understanding what residents wanted to see in Lions Park,” said Imlay City Manager Craig Horton. “Now, we are celebrating more than new park amenities—we are celebrating a shared vision brought to life.”

Beyond upgraded playground equipment and gathering areas, the park now features enhanced access to the regional Polly Ann Trail, connecting the park to surrounding trail networks and position Imlay City as a regional hub for outdoor recreation.

Nancy Boxey, Executive Director of the Lapeer County Community Foundation, praised the resident-led planning process.

“Residents helped imagine what this space could become, and now, we celebrate a park that reflects their vision while creating new opportunities for recreation, connection and community pride for generations to come,” Boxey said.

The free, family-friendly event will feature complimentary food, activities hosted by local non-profits, performances by local school groups, and guided nature talks focusing on native wildlife and the adjacent Belle River corridor.

Lions Park is located at 610 Water Works Rd., at the corner of Blacks Corners Road and Attica Road. The ribbon-cutting and surrounding festivities are open to the public.
