New tax request for Imlay Twp. for fire protection

TRI-CITY AREA — Voters in Lapeer County will be heading to the polls next week to determine the outcome of a number of proposals and other ballot questions.

Early voting started July 25 while the actual election day is Tuesday, August 4. Polls will open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m.

If a new tax for Imlay  Township passes, it would mean just under $206,000 in the first year.

Ballot wording for a new tax, for Imlay Township is as follows:

PROPOSITION TO AUTHORIZE A NEW MILLAGE IN THE AMOUNT OF 1.3 MILLS FOR THE PURPOSE OF PROVIDING FIRE PROTECTION SERVICES TO IMLAY TOWNSHIP.

Shall the constitutional limitation on the amount of taxes which may be imposed each year for all purposes on real and personal property in Imlay Township be increased so that the Township Board of Trustees is authorized to levy an additional tax in an amount of up to 1.3 mills ($1.30 per $1,000 of the taxable value of such property) for a period of 5 years beginning with the levy made on December 1, 2028 and running through the levy made in December, 2032 inclusive, for the purposes of fire protection services in the township? It is estimated that 1.3 mills would raise approximately $205,948.00 in the first year of the levy.

STREET AND SIDEWALK IMPROVEMENT MILLAGE RENEWAL

Shall the City of Imlay City, be authorized to levy an amount not to exceed 2.5000 mills ($2.50 per $1,000 of taxable value) as a renewal of the millage rate that expires in 2026, against all property within the City of Imlay City for a period of eight years, 2027 through 2034 inclusive, with the funds to be used to fund street and sidewalk improvements within Imlay City; and shall the City levy such millage for said purpose, thereby raising in the first year of the renewal an estimated $364,000.00? Meanwhile, in Dryden, voters are being asked to consider a new additional tax for the township library.

LIBRARY MILLAGE PROPOSAL

Shall Dryden Township, Lapeer County, Michigan, be authorized to levy a new additional millage annually in an amount not to exceed .1644 mill ($0.1644 per each $1,000 of taxable value) against all taxable property in the Township for a period of ten (10) years, 2026 through 2035, inclusive, to provide funds for operating, maintaining, and equipping the Dryden Township Library and for all other library purposes authorized by law? The estimate of the revenue the Township will collect if the millage is approved and levied in the first year of levy (2026) is approximately $52,000. The revenue from this millage levy will be disbursed to the Dryden Township Library.

ALMONT DISTRICT LIBRARY LIBRARY MILLAGE RENEWAL PROPOSAL

Shall the previously voted increase in the tax limitation imposed under Article IX, Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution in the amount of 1.25 mill ($1.25 per $1,000 of taxable value), which has been reduced to 1.1699 mills ($1.1699 per $1,000 of taxable value) by the required millage rollback and restore and increase the millage to 1.25 mill ($1.25 per $1,000 of taxable value), for a period of ten years (2027 through 2036 inclusive), and levy the millage for the purpose of funding the operations of the Almont District Library so as to support the current level of library services, raising an estimated $473,931.88 in the first year the millage is levied?

ALMONT COMMUNITY SCHOOLS OPERATING MILLAGE RENEWAL PROPOSAL

This proposal will allow the school district to continue to levy the statutory rate of not to exceed 18 mills on all property, except principal residence and other property exempted by law, required for the school district to receive its revenue per pupil foundation allowance. The remaining .3594 mill is only available to be levied to restore millage lost as a result of the reduction required by the Michigan Constitution of 1963 and will only be levied to the extent necessary to restore that reduction.

Shall the currently authorized millage rate limitation on the amount of taxes which may be assessed against all property, except principal residence and other property exempted by law, in Almont Community Schools, Lapeer, St. Clair, Macomb and Oakland Counties, Michigan, be renewed by 18.3594 mills ($18.3594 on each $1,000 of taxable valuation) for a period of 8 years, 2027 to 2034, inclusive, to provide funds for operating purposes; the estimate of the revenue the school district will collect if the millage is approved and 18 mills are levied in 2027 is approximately $1,764,385 (this is a renewal of millage that will expire with the 2026 tax levy)?

METAMORA TOWNSHIP POLICE PROTECTION MILLAGE PROPOSAL FOR AUGUST 2026 BALLOT

Shall the previously authorized increase in tax limitation imposed under Article IX Sec. 6 of the Michigan Constitution on General Ad Valorem taxes within Metamora Twp., Lapeer County, be renewed at 2.0756 mills with a new addition millage authorization  of 0.5 mills for a total authorization   of  2.5756 mills ($2.58 PER $1,000  of taxable value for the period of 2026 through 2036, inclusive to fund a continuation of police protection by the Metamora Township Police Department; and  Shall the township levy  such total authorization of millage for such purpose, thereby raising in the first year an estimated amount of $968,118?

LIBRARY MILLAGE PROPOSAL

Shall North Branch Township, Lapeer County, Michigan, be authorized to levy a millage annually in an amount not to exceed 1.0 mill ($1.00 per each $1,000 of taxable value), of which .9360 mill is a renewal of the previously authorized millages that expires in 2027 and .0640 mill is new additional millage to restore the millage rate lost as a result of the Headlee Amendment millage reductions, against all taxable property in the Township for a period of ten (10) years, 2028 through 2037, inclusive, to provide funds for operating, maintaining, and equipping the North Branch Township Library and for all other library purposes authorized by law? The estimate of the revenue the Township will collect if the millage is approved and levied in the first year of levy (2028) is approximately $156,000. The revenue from this millage levy will be disbursed to the North Branch Township Library.
