Bourdeau to return for Northwood
ALMONT — The 2026-27 edition of the Northwood men’s golf team includes former Almont standout Cam Bourdeau.
He returns to the squad after seeing action in one tournament during his freshman campaign.
Competing in the Midwest/Central Regional Preview at Katke Golf Club in Big Rapids, Bourdeau posted a 54-hole total of 237. It included an opening round 76; a second round 84; and a third round of 77.
That left him eighth on the Northwood team and 79th overall.
A total of 106 golfers competed at the event.
Northwood opens their 2026-27 campaign Sept. 14-15 at the Bulldog Classic. Katke Golf Course, in Big Rapids, is where the action takes place.
Capac hires Gonzalez as its coach
CAPAC — When the upcoming season begins, Josh Gonzalez will direct the Capac varsity volleyball program as their new head coach.
He takes over the sideline assignment from Cerenity Helzer, who stepped down from the post at the completion of the 2025 season.
I am ready to give this team everything I got,” said Gonzalez, a Capac grad. “I am a hard-working dedicated coach who believes in showing up, putting in the work and bringing out the best in every athlete.”
“I am excited for what we are building and can’t wait to see what this team accomplishes,” he said.
Capac is set to start the 2026 campaign on Wednesday, Aug. 19, when it travels to Marlette for a quad match. The action is slated to get underway at 5 p.m.
Forti, Schriber play for Madonna
IMLAY CITY — The Madonna University women’s volleyball squad, which counts Imlay City’s Hope Schriber and Lexa Forti among their ranks, went 2-2 this past week.
Platt Arena, in Huntington, Indiana is where the action unfolded.
Madonna started the four-match stretch Friday with a 16-25, 23-25, 16-25 setback to IU Columbus (Indiana).
Later that day, they bounced back with a 25-20, 19-25, 30-28, 18-25, 15-11 win against Huntington (Indiana).
They then followed it up with a 25-12, 25-15, 25-17 victory over Wilberforce University (Ohio) and a 22-25, 25-21, 19-25, 14-25 loss to Saint Mary of the Woods College on Saturday.
Forti, a 5-7 junior libero, provided Madonna with 63 digs over the four-match stretch.
Schriber, a 6-2 redshirt junior outside hitter, added 36 kills to Madonna’s cause.
With the results, Madonna University stands at 2-2 this season.
Stewart named Almont hoops coach
ALMONT — Jim Stewart was named to fill the vacated job as the Almont varsity girls’ basketball coach recently.
He replaces Erik Johnson, who stepped down from the position at the completion of last season.
“I am honored and excited to accept the role as girls’ varsity basketball coach at Almont,” Stewart said. “My background in athletics, leadership and coaching has shaped my belief in the value of hard work, discipline, and teamwork.”
“I look forward to building a competitive program that emphasizes fast-paced play, strong defense and personal growth. Most importantly, my goal is to help our student-athletes succeed both on and off the court and as future leaders. I am thankful for this opportunity and eager to get started and serve the Almont community.”
Garno registers sixth in age group
ALMONT — Athanasius Garno, of Almont, went the distance at the Iron Mike 5K Run/Walk in Armada on Saturday, Aug. 8.
It took him 28:13.9 to cover the territory, registering a sixth among male 20-29 age group entries.
That also placed him 20th overall.
Lucas Mack, of Wixom, was the race pacesetter. He stopped the watch at 19:01.9.
A total of 104 competitors finished the race.
O’Bryan ranks fourth at Caseville
TRI-CITY AREA — Aimee O’Bryan, a Dryden graduate, excelled at the Caseville-based Cheeseburger 5K Walk last Saturday.
Participating in the 50-59 age group, O’Bryan pulled up fourth with a clocking of 46:05.25. That also left her 32nd overall.
Alice Pokowski, of Almont, also competed that day. She took 47:02.49 to cover the territory, good for fourth among 60-69 age group entrants and ranking her 35th overall.
