Public safety training held in Lapeer County

LAPEER — The City of Lapeer Fire & Rescue hosted MGT-335: Event Security Planning for Public Safety Professionals. 

The course was open statewide to law enforcement, fire, EMS and emergency management personnel, with more than 20 students attending from Lapeer, Genesee and Barry counties.

The training focused on the planning and coordination needed to safely manage special events, including identifying potential risks, developing event security plans, protecting critical areas and infrastructure, and coordinating the different public safety agencies and other partners involved in an event.

“This type of training has a direct application here in Lapeer County. Events such as Lapeer Days and other large community gatherings involve multiple public safety agencies and disciplines working together,” said Lapeer Fire Chief Mike Vogt. “Bringing this training to Lapeer gives our local personnel an opportunity to train alongside many of the same partners they may be working with during an actual event, while also learning from public safety professionals from other areas of the state.”

Vogt said organizers appreciate everyone who traveled to Lapeer to participate and the agencies that allowed their personnel to attend. He also extended gratitude to the Michigan National Guard and Lapeer Armory for allowing use of their classroom for the course. 

“Having their facility right next door provided us with a great location to bring everyone together for the training,” Vogt said.

The training hosts thanked SERVPRO serving Lapeer and BIGGBY Coffee of Lapeer for providing refreshments for the class. The group appreciated their willingness to support local public safety personnel and those who traveled to Lapeer for the training.
