Carla Jepsen steps down as Imlay City clerk

IMLAY TWP. — Carla Jepsen will wrap up her 14-year career at the Imlay Township Clerk’s Office on Aug. 28.

Jepsen, a longtime fixture in Imlay Township government, submitted a resignation letter on Wednesday, Aug. 19, which fellow township trustees reluctantly accepted. 

“It’s time,” Jepsen said.

Jepsen, who was first elected as a township trustee in 2016, was named clerk in 2018 after Elizabeth Makedonsky stepped down to take a full-time job as a counselor with Lapeer Community Schools.

Makedonsky defeated Tom Melrose in the Republican primary in 2012 after he was appointed to fill the remainder of Dawn Childers’ term, who died suddenly in February 2012.

Jepsen was serving as deputy clerk at the time of Childer’s death. Before that, Jepsen worked on elections as a part-time township employee for several years

Jepsen told trustees “It’s been an honor and a pleasure” to serve the township. She promised a “smooth transition.”

Township Supervisor Rick Farkas said Jepsen’s resignation letter was “hard to read.” 

He said 80% of what the township does goes through the clerk’s office.

After accepting Jepsen’s resignation, Farkas called on the board to retain Jepsen as a consultant for 12 months at a rate of $500 a month. Trustees unanimously approved the request.

The board then named Deputy Clerk Vicki Sefcovic as Jepsen’s replacement and elevated Allysa Caudillo as deputy clerk.

Sefcovic, a lifelong Imlay Township resident, will serve out the remainder of Jepsen’s term, which runs through 2028.

Caudillo, who currently serves as the board’s recording secretary, has been a full-time township employee for eight months, but has worked on elections for the township since 2018.
