James “Jim” Carreras, age 59, of Lapeer, Michigan died Thursday, July 23, 2026 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

James “Jim” Carreras, age 59, of Lapeer, Michigan died Thursday, July 23, 2026 at his home surrounded by his loving family. James Cecil Carreras was born February 11, 1967 in Flint, MI. He is the son of Cecil and the late Judy Ann (Lewis) Carreras. Jim grew up in Swartz Creek, MI and is a graduate of Swartz Creek High School. Jim continued his education at Ohio Diesel in Cleveland, Ohio where he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He married Sharon Smith on August 17, 2020 in Hartland, Michigan.
Jim worked as an experimental mechanic for General Motors in Pontiac and Milford, Michigan, for 30 years.
Jim was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Imlay City, MI.
Above all else, Jim was a devoted husband, father, and family man who found his greatest joy in seeing those he loved happy. Some of his most treasured memories were made during two fishing trips to Alaska with his wife, father, and daughters. An avid hunter and conservationist, Jim also possessed extraordinary mechanical ability and excelled at building and repairing. Jim was an extremely generous and loving man, with a positive outlook on life.
Jim is survived by his wife: Rev. Sharon Smith of Lapeer, MI; his father Cecil Carreras of Lennon, MI; his brother, Jack (Erin) Carreras of Brighton, MI. He is also survived by children Hannah (Nathan Ansbro) Huff of Clarkston, MI and Faith (Caleb DeVries) Huff of Howell, MI; Scott (Sara) Huff of Columbus, Ohio, Andrew (Celia) Huff of Holly, MI, Craig (Cara) Huff of Quincy, MA; and Andrew Carreras of Columbiaville, MI; nephew, Luke; niece, Lila; and grandchildren, Noah, Harper, Henry, Hudson, and Hayes.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Judy Carreras.
Memorial services were held on Monday, July 27, 2026, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 200 N. Cedar St., Imlay City, Michigan. Reverend Dr. Donald Kreiss, Bishop of the Southeast Michigan Synod, officiated.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Paul Lutheran Church Roof Fund or St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 200 N. Cedar St. Imlay City MI 48444.
